A Journey to the New World

In 1851, Paul Gauguin's family moved to Lima, Peru. There, the young Gauguin was exposed to the vibrant colors and exotic cultures that would later influence his art. In 1865, Gauguin returned to France to study painting. He studied under the guidance of Camille Pissarro and Edgar Degas, two of the most influential artists of the time.

In 1873, Gauguin left France to join his family in Lima. He spent the next four years living and working in Peru, where he developed his unique style of painting. Gauguin's Peruvian paintings are characterized by their bold colors, flat perspectives, and symbolic imagery.
