The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is investigating a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella linked to cucumbers. As of August 29, 2023, there have been 152 reported cases across 25 states.

The outbreak strain is Salmonella serotype Newport, which can cause serious illness, including diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In some cases, Salmonella infection can lead to hospitalization or even death.

Affected Cucumbers

The cucumbers linked to the outbreak were sold under the brand names:

  • Fresh Thyme
  • Trader Joe's
  • Aldi
  • Cucumbers have also been sold at restaurants and other retailers.
Customers who have purchased cucumbers from these sources are urged not to eat them and to discard them immediately.

Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Symptoms of Salmonella infection typically develop within 12 to 72 hours of eating contaminated food and can include:

  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
