Mets Paul Blackburn Dealing With Low Back Discomfort Tylor Megill To Remain In Rotation

Mets’ Paul Blackburn Dealing with Low Back Discomfort; Tylor Megill to Remain in Rotation

Blackburn’s Injury and Recovery Timeline

Mets’ starting pitcher Paul Blackburn is presently experiencing low back discomfort, according to The Athletic. The right-hander exited his most recent start against the Phillies on Tuesday after encountering discomfort in his lower back area upon fielding a ground ball. An MRI scan confirmed the injury, and Blackburn has since been placed on the 10-day injured list. The Mets are yet to provide an official timetable for his return, but he is expected to miss multiple starts.

Blackburn has been a valuable addition to the Mets’ rotation this season, posting a 3.75 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 12 starts. His absence will create a void in the starting rotation, which the Mets will need to fill in his absence. Among the potential candidates to take his place are Tylor Megill, David Peterson, and Trevor Williams.

Megill to Remain in Rotation

No Immediate Demotion

Despite the injury to Blackburn, Tylor Megill will remain in the Mets’ rotation, at least for the time being. Megill has made five starts this season, posting a 5.06 ERA and 1.44 WHIP. While his numbers have not been as impressive as Blackburn’s, he has shown flashes of potential and the Mets are hoping he can continue to develop in a starting role.

Originally, Megill was expected to be optioned to Triple-A Syracuse after his last start. However, with Blackburn now on the injured list, the Mets have decided to keep Megill in the rotation for the time being. He is scheduled to start on Saturday against the Nationals.
